How To Choose an Email Name

Gone are the days when we depended on snail mail to send a letter to our relatives, friends and colleagues. Now the popular choice to correspond with people is via email. No more postcards, paper, pens, envelopes and stamps. You just have to log in to your email account from a computer and type away! No need to go to the post office to drop off your letter. And compared to a snail mail, you don’t have to count the days before the other party receives your letter; your recipient receives the email immediately. To get started with email, you need to create an email name first. This is a decision that you have to put some thought into because like it or not, your email name serves as a reflection of your personality.
First thing that you have to consider in choosing an email name is its primary purpose. Is it going to be used for your personal or professional correspondence? If you will be using your email for personal correspondence, you can use your nickname, your hobby, your favorite beverage, your favorite fruit or your favorite snack. If you will be using your email mainly for your work or for your business, stick with formal email names. You can use your first and last name, your initials, your title or position, or your business name.

When you’re done choosing an email name, visit the website of the email service you want to register to and check the availability of the email name you came up with. If you have a common name such as John Smith, you may stumble upon email name availability problems. Don’t fret if they say that the email name is already taken because you will be provided with email name suggestions. You can also add numbers or symbols to the email name to make it more unique. Just do away with adding personal information such as your Social Security Number. Make your email name friendly by carefully choosing the combination of words and numbers. It won’t do any good if people have a hard time remembering your email address.

When you have successfully chosen an email name, register with the online email service of your choice. Remember to create a strong password for your email address and never give it out to anyone. Once you’re all set up, proceed with advising everyone you know of your new email address. In return, get their email addresses so that you can build your contact list and start your correspondence to everyone you know via email.
