How To Restore Registry Files

The Windows Registry, or simply known as “the registry,” is a critical centralized database of configuration settings in every version of Windows operating system. It is where much of the settings and information about the software, hardware, user preferences, OS configurations, and others, are stored for every system function. Whenever one or more of the registry keys stored in the registry is deleted, the tendency is that the functionality or the performance of the system becomes limited. It pays to know how to restore registry files especially if you have intentionally or inadvertently deleted registry files on your computer. Here are some guidelines for you to take in restoring registry files on your computer.

How to Restore Registry Files If the Computer Starts Normally

* Start your computer and wait for it to fully boot up. Click the “Start” menu and then go to Accessories. There you will find the sub-folder “System Tools.” Click “System Restore.”
* Choose “Restore my computer to an earlier time” and then click “Next.” You will see a calendar from which you have to select a date before the key was removed. Click the date, then click “Next.”
* Allow the computer to restore the system to that point. Once done, the registry files that were once deleted will be restored.

How to Restore Registry Files If the Computer Does Not Start Normally

* Restart the computer. As soon as the booting up begins, start pressing the F8 key. Do not stop until the boot menu is flashed on the screen. Use the arrow keys to navigate to “Safe Mode.” Press “Enter” and wait for the boot up into Safe Mode.
* Do the restoration process just like when the computer starts normally by using the System Restore function.

What If The Computer Does Not Start in Safe Mode?

* If the booting up in safe mode fails, then there is a need to reinstall the operating system. The deleted registry files are surely critical ones. Take note that when reinstalling the operating system is being talked about, this means that your files will be deleted to give way to a new installation of the operating system.
* First off, start your computer and press F8 repeatedly until the boot menu appears. Open the CD-ROM drive and insert the Windows installation disc. Close the door of the drive and choose the menu that lets you boot from the CD-ROM drive (the menu may vary). After choosing, hit “Enter.”
* The system will then start using the Windows installation wizard. Just follow the prompts on the screen. Once you have reinstalled the operating system, the registry files will be restored.

Do not simply alter registry files.

* Altering the files in the registry can bring harm to the system if you do not know what you are really doing.
