How To Pick Keywords for a Website

A successful website draws attention and has regular website traffic. This is mainly because relevant keywords are used on the website. Use of relevant keywords makes it easier for you to get to the top of the list on search engines. Picking the keywords that are to be used on your website is not that easy and it involves research. Read on to get tips on how to pick keywords for a website.

Write down possible keywords that can be used for your website.
For this step, you may want to put yourself in another person’s shoes, preferably someone who belongs in your target market. Now think about the main content of your website and then think about what keywords you would type on a search engine in order to end up on your page. Write down all possible keywords that are related to the content of your website.

Use a keyword tool to come up with more keywords for your website.
There are different keyword tools available on the Internet such as WordTracker or Google AdWords Keyword Tool. Type in the keywords that you came up with in Step 1 and you will get new keyword ideas that are relevant to what you already have. The keyword tool also often lists relevant keywords that were searched for in the last month. Write down the keywords that strongly describe the content you have on your website.
Verify how much competition you have for the keywords.
Pull up your web browser and use a popular search engine like Google. Type in the keywords that you have gathered from Step 1 and Step 2 and see which keywords will appear on top of the search engine results. You may want to choose the keywords that are used less by your competitors but strongly reflects the content of your website. In this manner, you will get more chances of being indexed on search engines as compared to using the keywords used by your competitors.

Use the chosen keywords in your website content and meta tags.
To get better search engine rankings, use the keywords on the content of your website and on the meta tags. The meta tags are placed in the header section of the web page and provides the information to a search engine about what the content of your website is. If there are misspelled keywords suggested by the keyword tool in Step 2, they should be used in the meta tags, but spell the keywords correctly when you include them in the content of the website.

One needs to be patient if he will rely on organic search engine optimization instead of paying for the keywords to be on top of the search engine results. The effect may not be immediate, but eventually you will see your web page rise on top of the search engines against your competitors.
